Feature Taste of the Month: Lemon Grass Chicken on Rice Vermicelli at Lotus Vietnamese Noodle House
Once serving a range of Asian and Western dishes, Lotus Grill has been transformed into Lotus Vietnamese Noodle House. This old favourite now serves exclusively Vietnamese cuisine including broken rice dishes and traditional vermicelli bowls. The lemon grass chicken on rice vermicelli option comes topped with shredded carrots, cucumbers, bean sprouts, lettuce and is sprinkled with roasted peanuts. This large bowl is big enough to satisfy, and ample enough to share. Top the meal off with a creamy bubble tea such as avocado or honeydew. With generous portions and quick service, the revamped Lotus remains a choice lunch spot.

Did You Know?
Within the Cantos Music Foundation’s collection is a piece of Rolling Stones history. In 2001, the foundation obtained The Rolling Stones Mobile Studio, a mini-recording studio on wheels. The idea for this mobile studio took shape in 1968, and by 1970, the studio was already recording future hits. In addition to recording Rolling Stones classics such as Sticky Fingers (1971), Exile on Main Street (1972) and It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll (1974), the mobile studio saw the likes of other legendary artists including Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley, Deep Purple and Johnney Halliday. The studio continued to service other great performers and musicians until 2000. To view this and other items in the collection, attend a drop-in tour on Sundays at 1:30 pm and 3:00 pm, or schedule an appointment by calling 543-5115. For more information, visit www.cantos.ca.

Victoria Crossing History:
The Old YWCA Building
223 - 12 Avenue SW
Past
Opened in February 1911, the YWCA building became the first Y to be built in Alberta.
Known simply as the Old Y, this building was born out of a need to house single young women looking for a place to stay in a then-predominantly male city. This three-storey brick and sandstone structure was able to house 60 women and included a dining area, a library, a swimming pool and gymnasium. However in 1940, the pool was closed in order to provide additional accommodation. In 1954, an annex was built on the east side of the building that provided a new swimming pool and gym. By 1971, the YWCA moved to a new location in the city’s downtown, and the building was handed to the City of Calgary
Present
In 1982, the Old Y building was declared an Alberta Provincial Historic Resource. Today, it remains the oldest social service building in the city, and houses non-profit organizations, while the building’s annex houses the Beltline Fitness Centre.
Future
In addition to showcasing Calgary’s history, the Old Y will continue to serve the community through the fitness centre as well as the numerous non-profit agencies residing there.
