Cultural Festival

The Mosaic Cultural Festival is an event that celebrates Calgary's
urban community and the diversity and creativity that is alive
within it. The 2007 festival took place on the afternoon of
Saturday, June 2 from 12:00-5:00pm in Central Memorial Park
(12th Avenue and 4th Street SW). There were approximately 5,000 people attending the 2007 Mosaic Festival, enjoying the beautiful weather and many exciting activities.
Mosaic 2007 featured:
- Two performance stages featuring music and dance artists
representing many different cultures,
- Approximately 50 exhibitors & vendors consisting of cultural
associations, community and non-profit groups, artisans
and other vendors,
- A beer garden - new this year,
- An assortment of food vendors selling various ethnic delicacies,
- A free draw for prizes from Hotel Arts, Yuk Yuk's, River Cafe, Fabutan, Fort Calgary and more,
- A cultural craft centre where guests learned to make an
ethnic craft,
- A children's area with games, face painting and other
fun activities, and
- Buskers around the park entertaining mini audiences of
their own.
Performers included: Trinidad & Tobago Organettes, Calgary
Folk Arts Council, Studio Sublime Belly Dance, Fineza Flamenca
Dance, Tropicart Brazilian Dance, Peruvian Rhythms, Nuna'Y,
Jin Jung Kwan Hapkido and more!
The Calgary
Heritage Initiative conducted two historical tours to add to the event. Here is some information about the 2007 historical tours that occurred on the day of Mosaic:
1st Street booms again - Victoria Crossing Tour
(Meet on the east side of the Memorial Park Library at 11 am)
100 years ago 1st Street SW boomed, and today the Victoria Crossing
area is booming again. Pioneer businessmen, civic leaders and
philanthropists left their mark on the area the first time around.
This Calgary Heritage Initiative tour celebrates the history
that remains beneath the new construction cranes. Central
Memorial Park Tour
(Meet at the Horseman of the Plains statue at 1:30 pm)
While you're at Mosaic, take some time to learn about the history
of Calgary's oldest park. True to its name, for decades the
park was central to city life. It has been a centre of celebration,
education, and remembrance. Learn about the park's many personalities
on this Calgary Heritage Initiative tour.
