Safe Streets - Safe City
A team of crime prevention specialists was assembled by the
Community Life Improvement Council (CLIC) to conduct a crime
prevention pilot project here in the Beltline. Consulting
with the Beltline Community Association, the Beltline BRZ's
(4th Street, Uptown 17 and Victoria Crossing), some social
agencies and various other community representatives, the
team set out to develop strategies for proactively dealing
with crime related issues.
The team has completed research on crime prevention strategies
that have been implemented in other areas of the world,
along with current crime statistics in Calgary, feedback
from the public, and past and present initiatives to reduce
crime and social disorder in Calgary.
The result is "Safe Streets - Safe City"; a report
released on November 17, 2004, outlining 29 recommendations
for a crime and social disorder reduction strategy applicable
to the Beltline area of Calgary. The recommendations are
designed to be applied to all other areas of the city, and
the country, as well. Through the recommendations, a truly
exciting opportunity is created for the CLIC to work with
communities and BRZs, the Calgary Police Service, Bylaw
Services and all levels of government on some innovative
and collaborative strategies for reducing crime and social
disorder in our city.
