Clean Team
Calgary's 5 inner city Business Revitalization Zones (Calgary
Downtown Association, Uptown 17, Victoria Crossing, Kensington
and 4th Street), in partnership with the Mayor's "Clean
to the Core" initiative, are working to keep some of
Calgary's busiest pedestrian streets clean.
This joint venture between The City of Calgary and CBIZ (Calgary's
Business Revitalization Zones) is modeled after the already
successful GAAP (Graffiti Awareness
and Abatement Program), where the BRZs and the City worked
together to help reduce inner city graffiti.
Funding for the CBIZ Clean Team was received out of the larger
Clean to the Core budget at The City of Calgary and the BRZs
were able to strategically use these funds to create an exciting
new maintenance program to supplement the work The City of
Calgary is already providing. This partnership was created
to clean litter and debris, remove weeds, reduce the spread
of graffiti and create more sustainable and safe pedestrian
districts with the BRZs.
"This program will bring an enhanced quality of life
to the centre city and to all of Calgary" said Mayor
Dave Bronconnier, "We are acting on the concerns we hear
from citizens and businesses about safety, about graffiti
and about the general state of the centre city, all of which
have negative impacts on the quality of life of our citizens.
We believe increasing the vibrancy of downtown will reverberate
throughout the rest of the city."
The pilot program commenced September 1, 2006, with Double
KK site services being contracted to take on the task of sprucing
up our streets. Rod Weed of Double KK has had many years of
experience working with the inner city BRZs and was the perfect
fit for this project.
The inner city project focuses on:
- Removal of overflowing garbage bags from garbage receptacles
- Power washing or steam cleaning of public spaces and street
furniture
- Cleaning ledges, flower planters, public art objects,
benches, rest areas, etc. of dirt and debris
- Continuous litter pick-up in public spaces
- Cleaning tree grates of refuse and debris
- Reporting and repairing damaged street furniture
- Removal of graffiti, posters and/or stickers from street
furniture
- Some snow removal and ice prevention on public sidewalks
during the winter months
The CBIZ Clean Team pilot project ended on January 31, 2007,
but we were thrilled to see the continuation of the program
throughout 2007.
