BRZ/City
of Calgary Collaboration
In developing its objectives for the 2002 -2004 period, Calgary
City Council acknowledged the need to work more closely with
Calgary's Business Revitalization Zones (BRZs). Reference
to this initiative is found on page 11 of the report published
in 2002, Looking
Ahead - Moving Forward.
Beginning in July 2002, representatives of Calgary's nine
BRZs have been working closely with The City of Calgary
Executive Office to improve the working relationship between
various departments within City Hall and obtain better recognition
for the benefits the BRZs provide to this city.
Weekly collaborative sessions have addressed the following
common issues:
- Policing
- Maintenance of streetscape improvements
- Landscaping & parks
- Marketing
- Economic Development
- Panhandling
- Graffiti
Representatives from Calgary Economic Development, various
social agencies, Calgary Police Service, Calgary Parking
Authority, Bylaw Services, as well as several other departments
in the City of Calgary have attended Collaboration meetings
to assist in strategic planning. Both The City of Calgary
and Calgary Economic Development have created positions
within their organizations dedicated to liaising with BRZs,
which is definitely an encouraging step in the right direction.
