Beltline Initiative
Calgary is a unique city in its rapid growth and development,
which creates a great deal of pressure on the city's infrastructure.
A perfect solution to the pressures of growth is to increase
the population density in the Beltline, thus creating a more
balanced transportation system and developing a more exciting,
cosmopolitan city capable of competing for knowledge-based
business.
The Beltline Initiative group, made up of the Victoria and
Connaught Community Assocations, as well as the 4th Street,
Uptown 17, and Victoria Crossing Business Revitalization Zones,
has taken this idea to new heights. The group has produced
the Beltline Initiative report, which is a comprehensive set
of suggestions and guidelines for achieving these objectives
of developing a vibrant, efficient Inner City within the Beltline.
The projects currently underway for the Beltline Initiative
are the Central Memorial Park
Land Use & Programming Feasibility Study, the Haultain
Enhancement Project and the 10th,
11th and 12th Avenues South Planning Study.
The Beltline Initiative has been involved in several development
projects since its launch in May 2003, including the following
in Victoria Crossing: Brownstones, M-Tech, IBM, Sasso, Elbow
River Casino, Chocolate (see "completed"),
arriVa and Union Square (see "in
progress"). These and other projects were celebrated
at the "Beltline Initiative Works" event on September
29, 2004. Download a PDF file of the presentation unveiled
at the event by clicking the link on the right-hand section

The Beltline Initiative Report is also available for download
