ON THE DRAWING BOARD

  New Century Plaza - 214 - 11 Avenue SW
Giffels Design Build Inc. has teamed up with architect Stone McQuire Vogt to construct a state-of-the-art LEED office building. The design of this ten-storey building boasts a 40% reduction in energy use vs. typical office buildings. This project will add approximately 174,000 square feet of office space to Victoria Crossing, complete with underground parking.

Construction is set to begin in 2007. Click here for a fact sheet on the project.

The Exchange - Centre Street SE, between 11 and 12 Avenues
www.poonmckenzie.com

An exciting announcement on the list of development projects in Victoria Crossing is The Exchange, which is a mixed-use project slated for the former Co-op site, with a unique opportunity to redesign an entire city block. The project, owned by Giffels Management Ltd. and designed by Poon McKenzie Architects, consists of four towers of varying heights, from 28-45 stories, including residential, commercial & office space, plus five levels of underground parking. The project is topped off with detailed attention to the public realm, with a promenade meandering through the entire site, featuring public art and landscaped public spaces.

The Exchange is now in the Design Development phase, and we look forward to future announcements about its progress. Click the image on the left for a fact sheet on the project, or click here to see an enlarged rendering.

Stampede Expansion Plan
www.calgarystampede.com
On August 10, 2004, The Calgary Exhibition & Stampede announced its long-term vision to expand and redevelop Stampede Park and re-energize its historic location as a year-round gathering place for the community.

Olds College Calgary Campus:
The Calgary Stampede is working closely with Olds College toconvert the historical Weston Bakery building on the Stampede Grounds into the new home of Olds College's Calgary Campus (rendering to the left). A glass entryway will be added to the existing building and a new glass structure built adjacent to the Weston Bakery building. A transitional facilty on the Stampede Grounds is currently being used until the renovations and additions are completed in late 2008. The initial course offerings at the Olds College Calgary Campus include a Land Administration Certificate and a Fashion Retailing Certificate. Eventually, Olds College plans to use the Calgary Campus to support an apparel institute.

New Agriculture Building:
The current Agriculture Building was built in 1919 and is at the end of its lifespan. The new facility will be more than double the size of the current building, including stalling/exhibition space, a show ring, and classroom and youth program space to support the Stampede's extensive youth programs and deepen research and education partnerships with various educational institutions to bring urban and rural audiences together.

Trade and Entertainment Complex - In Progress

Elbow River Bank:
For the Elbow River Park & Greening Initiative, the Stampede will reclaim and transform the 30 acres along the river's edge into a park setting. This will link to other green spaces in the neighbouring areas, such as Fort Calgary and the Zoo, to potentially create a fully integrated urban park network. The park will be home to the new Indian Village, and possibly a Heritage Trail and Western Heritage Centre that permanently displays the many artifacts collected by the Stampede over its 120-year history and celebrates its relationship with the First Nations people.

Other projects in the development plan include an additional Roundup Centre expansion, an Agricultural Discovery Centre, a Youth Centre and a new main street and festival area.

Railtown
The Remington Development Corporation purchased the Canadian Pacific Railway lands in East Victoria, on both sides of the tracks in 2002, and may be ready to reveal plans for the site in the spring of 2007. The land will likely be developed into office, retail and residential housing. This project is extremely significant in connecting Victoria Crossing to the East Village and Downtown Core, and has opened the door to discussions about an underpass for 4 Street SE (Olympic Way) under the railway tracks.
