Born in England and educated in Canada, Sir Frederick Haultain came
to the Calgary area at the age of 27. He settled in Fort Macleod,
where he was one of the first practicing lawyers. He was also well
known as a Crown Prosecutor and an occasional journalist.
In 1901, Sir Frederick Haultain was named the Premier of the Northwest
Territories, prior to the formation of Alberta and Saskatchewan
as separate provinces. During this time, he was also Commissioner
of the Department of Education. When the Northwest Territories was
split into two provinces in 1905, many thought Haultain would become
the first premier of Alberta, but instead he was relegated to Leader
of Opposition in the newly formed province of Saskatchewan.
Haultain School, located at 225 13 Avenue SW and originally called
South Ward School, was built in 1894. In 1910, the school was renamed
after Sir Frederick Haultain as a tribute to his contributions to
the Department of Education during his term as Premier. |
